Discovering Rabat

Rabat, Morocco's esteemed capital and seventh-largest city, is home to over 1.2 million people in its metropolitan area. It's the administrative core for the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, resting on the Atlantic coast at the Bou Regreg river's mouth, opposite Salé.

Founded in the 12th century by the Almohads, Rabat became a haven for Barbary corsairs by the 17th century. It was named the administrative hub by the French protectorate in 1912 and proudly became Morocco’s capital upon independence in 1955.

Forming a large urban area with Temara and Salé, Rabat is one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities. Its ancient central district is a World Heritage Site.
